Bassenthwaite Lake in the English Lake District is the fourth largest Lake in Cumbria's National Park! Bassenthwaite Lake is is the only body of water in the Lake District to actually use the word "lake" in its name, all the others being "waters", "meres" or "tarns" the lake stretches four miles in length and three quarters of a mile at its widest point.
Bassenthwaite is overlooked by Skiddaw, Skiddaw is a mountain in the Lake District National Park. Skiddaw's summit sits at 931m (3,054 feet) above sea level it is the fourth highest mountain in England.
Bassenthwaite Lake offers breathtaking views, laybys beside the lake are popular spots for photographers and bird watchers.
This area of the Lake District is an ideal place for Camping, Walking, Rambling, Climbing, Fishing and much more.
The A66 dual carriageway runs roughly north/south along the western edge of the Bassenthwaite Lake. The section running south towards Keswick was built on top of a former railway line leading to Penrith.
The lake's catchment is the largest of any lake in the Lake District. This, along with a large percentage of cultivable land within this drainage area, makes Bassenthwaite Lake a fertile habitat.
The lake contains Salmon, Trout, Pike, Perch, Dace, Roach and Eels. Osprey returned to nest by the lake annually, Cormorants have been known to fish the lake, Herons can also been seen around the lakes edges.
Bassenthwaite is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Allerdale. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 412. The village is about 9 miles (14 km) east of Cockermouth, and is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) from Bassenthwaite Lake. Containing just a single pub (Sun Inn) and no shops, it is largely an agricultural community, with farms within the village itself, with a number of holiday homes. Boasting a Church of England Church on its outskirts, together with a Methodist chapel, it contains many elements of the archetypal English village including a green, primary school and a stream running through it. Bassenthwaite Village is based at the foot of Skiddaw.
